CADE is located on Howell Mountain in close proximity to the town of Angwin. The property affords views across the Napa valley floor all the way to the Mayacamas Mountain range and as far south as Mt. Diablo.

Why was Howell Mountain chosen as the location for CADE?
With a strong tradition of producing world class wines over the last 100 years, the Howell Mountain AVA is known as one of the most prestigious growing regions in Napa Valley. With its unique microclimates, soil types and an altitude high above the valley floor; Howell Mountain was designated Napa Valley's first AVA in 1983. We were afforded a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a world class vineyard in this renowned growing region and we are excited to craft world class wines in the Modern Howell Mountain style at CADE Estate Winery.

What is the total acreage of the property?
CADE Estate sits on a total of 54 acres.
What is the acreage of the vineyard?
21 acres are planted to vine (planted in 2003). Much of the remaining acreage, (28 acres) has been put in a land trust so that it will always remain open space.
What varieties are planted on the estate?
The vineyard is planted with over 37,000 vines totaling 21 acres:
- 19 acres Cabernet
- Clones: 7, 4, 169, 337
- Rootstocks: 3309, 420, 420A, 1014
- 2 acres of Merlot grapes

What is the composition of the soil in the vineyard?
CADE Estate's soil is made up of mostly Tufa, or condensed volcanic ash, interspersed with Tephra and Loam.
When was the CADE vineyard planted?
The vineyard was planted in the spring of 2003.
When was the first crop harvested?
The first crop was harvested in the fall of 2006.
What is the elevation?
CADE is located at 1,500 ft – 1,850 ft above sea level.
What is Leed Certification?
We are proud to be Napa valley’s first 100% LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified estate winery.
LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. At CADE, this includes the use of:
- Recycled steel
- Concrete mixed with fly ash, a coal by-product that reduces the use of cement
- Naturally insulated caves and fermentation room; additional insulation from recycled materials, such as blue jeans
- Individually jacketed fermentation tanks
- Renewable resources such as cork flooring
- Structural glass and solar panels to minimize the use of electricity
- Grey water for irrigation
- Bike racks and electrical car outlets to encourage green transportation
What is the square footage for the winery and caves?
The wine caves at CADE are approximately 14,290 square feet. There is a 9,000 square foot production building and a 5,000 square foot administrative building.
Who is the architect that designed the winery?
Juan Carlos Fernandez, previously of Lail Design Group, was the Project Designer for CADE. For more on Juan Carlos, click here.
Who is the contractor for the project?
Napa based Grassi & Associates was the appointed general contractor for the the construction of CADE. Grassi & Associates has worked in Napa and Sonoma Counties since 1986 providing complete construction services on fine custom homes, restaurants and wineries. Many of their completed projects have appeared in Elle Décor, Metropolitan Home, Sunset, Home, Bon Appetit, San Francisco Magazine and the San Francisco Chronicle.
Who is responsible for the interiors?
Shopworks Design was selected to design the interior spaces and work in concert with project architect, Juan Carlos Fernandez. The Napa based design firm is focused on brand development and execution for hospitality, restaurant, and retail environments. Their work includes the W Hotel San Francisco and The Carneros Inn in Napa Valley.
When did the winery open?
CADE opened to the public in March 2009.

Is it possible to schedule tours or tastings?
Yes, at CADE we offer a winery tour at 10am and 1pm by appointment. Regular tastings are hosted on the hour from 10am to 3pm by prior appointment.
