Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

2009 CADE Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

Production: 33 Barrels
Release Price: $135/bottle
Bottled: July of 2010
Release Date: April 2012
Varietals: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Alcohol: 15.2%

Our Thoughts

While the 2009 vintage was challenging for most due to rainfall in the middle of the harvest season, CADE Estate achieved excellent ripeness through the strategic crop-thinning that took place in June. The estate was afforded extended hang-time that lasted until the end of October. Aromas of graphite, black cherry, chocolate and soy are followed by flavors on the palette of black cherry, cardamom, dark chocolate, and espresso. The wonderful freshness on the finish is the result of an elevated acidity which compliments the deep, round tannins; culminating with a light dusting on the finish.

To quote wine critic Robert Parker in his December 2010 Issue of The Wine Advocate;

“The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a big, rich, seamless wine endowed with gorgeous depth and plushness. Dark red fruit, licorice, spices and menthol are some of the notes that take shape in the glass in this big, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon. A rich, textured finish rounds things out in style. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” (94 points)

2008 CADE Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

Production: 900 cases
Release Price: $135/bottle
Bottled: July of 2010
Release Date: April 2011
Varietals: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Alcohol: 15.4%

Our Thoughts

We feel that the 2008 CADE Estate Cabernet Sauvignon eclipses our blockbuster 2007, the reasons being that the weather in October 2008 was fantastic with not a drop of rain falling during ripening season and harvest. Aromas of black cherry, minerals, warm chocolate, and black currants are followed on the palate with flavors of blackberry puree, chocolate, vanilla, black olive and rosemary. We are amazed at the rich and plush tannins of this wine a testament not only the 2008 vintage but also to winemaker Toni Biagi and his skilled crew at CADE.

To quote wine critic Robert Parker in his December 2010 Issue of The Wine Advocate;
"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits a glorious nose of blueberries, black raspberries, plums, graphite and crushed rocks. This exquisite Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is about as good as it gets from these higher elevation vineyards on the eastern side of the Napa Valley. A brilliant texture, stunning purity and great length make for a fabulous wine to drink over the next 20-25 years." (98+ points)

Release Price: $262/2-pack
Bottled: December 2009
Release Date: April 2010
Varietals: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon
14% Merlot

Our Thoughts

This is our inaugural release from our Estate Vineyard. Planted in 2003 we are the only winery to produce wine from this exciting and dramatic hillside estate. When first opened it reveals a strikingly provocative aromatic display of graphite, violet and cedar. With aeration aromas of black Currant, dark chocolate and black cherry fill the glass. A classic mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, it is full bodied and benefits from aging with flavors of chocolate truffle, black cherry, cocoa powder and currant. It displays immense concentration and texture suggesting it will benefit with 2-3 years of bottle age or a good decant. It will evolve nicely for the next 15+ years.

12% Merlot
Alcohol: 15%
pH: 3.91
t/a: 5.4 g/L

Our Thoughts

This is the first Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon released by CADE Winery. Our inaugural release is a blend of vineyards from a select group of small artisan growers found high up on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. It is a rich, intensely structured Cabernet Sauvignon with a striking tannin profile that truly exemplifies the Howell Mountain Appellation.

Enticing aromas of chocolate, black berry, soy and black olive intermingle perfectly with the creamy layers of blackberry, rose petal, black cherry and fig cake providing this wine with rich upfront fruit and a long lingering finish. With proper aging there is no reason this wine won't evolve nicely over the next 6-10 years but can also be enjoyed in its youth with a healthy decant.

2005 cade Napa Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon

Bottled: Took place on April 11th, 2007

Our Thoughts

The cade "Napa Cuvée" is a mouthful of a wine blended from Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Merlot (25%). The Cabernet Sauvignon picked from the alluvial fans of Napa Valley lends dense flavors of blackberry, cherry, chocolate and blueberry while the Cabernet from the hillsides of Howell Mountain give the wine structure, depth and ageability. The Merlot component fleshes out the mid-palate and adds flavors of bing cherry and plum. Although this wine is crafted to be enjoyed now, it will shine with 2 more years of bottle age and reap the benefits over the following 5 to 7.

Our Thoughts

Our Estate Sauvignon Blanc exhibits the bright tropical qualities that are typical of Sauvignon Blanc from our Oakville Estate. Aromas of Pineapple, Lychee, Apricot Blossoms and hints of Anise are followed on the palate by flavors of Piña Colada, Guava and Vanilla.  The small percentage of Semillon provides a smooth and balanced mouthfeel while the Viognier lends light floral aromatics.  The Estate Sauvignon Blanc displays a lively freshness that makes it delightful to drink now, but thanks to the Semillon can be aged further for 3-4 years.

Our Thoughts

We rate the 2009 Estate Sauvignon Blanc an 11 on the hedonism scale! It presents a stunning array of aromas on the nose; lychee, apricot, pineapple, apple cobbler and hints of cut grass. The palate unfolds with flavors of pineapple, mandarin, lemon curd and hints of vanilla bean. While this wine is drinking wonderfully now we feel that with the addition of the 15% Sémillon that it will continue to develop over the next 5-7 year.

Our Thoughts

In 2010 after 3 years of painstaking work, our PlumpJack Estate vineyard is finally the backbone of our Sauvignon Blanc. The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc harvested from our Estate vineyards now contributes over half (52%) of the grapes for this wine. The resulting increase in quality is readily apparent. Aromas of Lychee, Honeydew Melons, spearmint and freshly mown hay are followed on the palate with flavors of melon, figs, Fiji apple and spring peas. A little more acid than the 2009 results in a mouthwatering finish that brings you back for a second glass!

The 2009 CADE Sauvignon Blanc is alive with vibrant, fresh acidity and perfectly balanced rich fruit characteristics. Wonderful aromas of spearmint, guava, kiwi, gooseberry and snow peas are followed on the palate with flavors of concentrated lemon/lime mix, fig and guava. The lees contact gives the wine a nice mouth feel and texture. We feel that the addition 26% fruit from our Estate vineyard in Oakville has lent a nice complexity and depth of flavors to this wine.

2006 CADE Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley

Bottled: March 6th, 2007

Our Thoughts

2006 is a great year for Sauvignon Blanc. Primary aromas of lemon/lime zest are accompanied by orange blossom, cantaloupe and ripe honeydew melon. Secondary aromas of gooseberry, wet stones and vanilla beans can be found with aeration. Flavors of honeydew melon, lemon zest and apple hard candy are framed by vanilla and baked bread from the new oak. The 6% Semillon gives the mouth feel a nice roundness as well as adding flavors of ripe figs.
